Seneharib Water Project

Seneharib Water Project

Seneharib Water Project
The irrigation project of Erbil’s Castle was implemented in the region of Bastora, to the North of Erbil, near the village of Qala Murtka, during the rule of the famous Assyrian King Seneharib (705-681 B.C.). Seneharib built a dam to confine the water of rivers and springs, and drag it through underground canals to the City of Four gods (Arba Ilo, which is Erbil currently). The canal is 21Km long. The reasons behind the digging of a canal were noted in cuneiform writing on a board, just like it is the pattern today when placing the corner stone for a given project.
