Erbil Hosts Award Ceremony for World, Arab, and Asian Championship Athletes
In accordance with the directive of His Excellency Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, any athlete representing the Kurdistan Region who wins a medal in world or continental championships is to be granted special recognition and awards. Within this framework, a ceremony was held today, Monday, July 13, 2026, at Peshawa Hall to honor successful athletes.
The event was attended by Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw, Dr. Chinar Saad Abdullah (Member of the KDP Central Committee), Aryan Salahaddin (Deputy Minister of Culture), Sardar Ismail (Director General of Sports), and a significant number of officials and athletes.
This third round of the ceremony, organized by the General Directorate of Sports, honored 130 athletes who achieved success at the global, Arab, and Asian levels.
During the ceremony, recognition was given to both male and female athletes—competing in both individual and team sports—who secured first, second, or third-place finishes in international and continental championships, thereby raising the profile of the Kurdistan Region.
The Governor of Erbil praised the hard work and dedication of the athletes and coaches, emphasizing that "developing sports and supporting athletes is one of our most important objectives." He further noted that these successes serve as a powerful inspiration for the youth of Kurdistan to pursue further athletic achievements.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, awards and certificates of appreciation were presented to the successful athletes in recognition of their efforts and commitment.
