Erbil ... Launch of the International Organization for Migration’s Strategic Plan in Iraq (2025–2029)

Today, Thursday, September 10, 2026, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) launched its operational Strategic Plan in Iraq for the years 2025–2029. The event took place in the presence of Rebar Ahmed, KRG Minister of Interior; Dr. Saman Barzinji, KRG Minister of Health; Safeen Dizayee, Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations; Omed Khoshnaw, Governor of Erbil; senior IOM officials in Iraq; Srwa Rasool, Director General of the Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC); as well as university academics, writers, and intellectuals.
 

Within the framework of coordination with governmental institutions and relevant stakeholders, the strategic plan aims to strengthen migration governance, safeguard rights, and mitigate the negative impacts of migration and displacement in Iraq.

It was highlighted that the strategy places particular emphasis on addressing the root causes of displacement, facilitating voluntary return, supporting affected communities, and enhancing institutional capacities.
Additionally, the IOM reiterated its commitment to expanding cooperation and coordination with the Government of Iraq, the Kurdistan Regional Government, the United Nations, and both international and local partners, striving to provide sustainable livelihood and growth opportunities through development and support initiatives.
