The President of Kurdistan Regional meets with Hungarian President

On Friday night, December 9, 2022. President Nechirvan Barzani received Hungarian President Katalin Novak in Erbil.

The meeting discussed Hungary's relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the political process and the situation in Iraq in general, Erbil-Baghdad issues and dialogue to resolve their issues, the fight against terrorism and the threat of ISIS, the situation of refugees and communities in the Kurdistan Region.

Both sides stressed the bilateral desire to develop relations and joint cooperation in all fields, they also considered the continued cooperation and support of the international coalition for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region necessary to fight terrorism and completely destroy ISIS.

Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region welcomed the visit of the Hungarian President and considered it as a sign of support for the Kurdistan Region. He expressed their gratitude to the Kurdistan Region for Hungary's military support to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region during the fight against ISIS, as well as humanitarian assistance, especially to Christians and Yezidis

For her part, Hungarian President Katalin Novak expressed her country's gratitude for the sacrifices and the role of the Peshmerga in defeating ISIS and reaffirmed her country's continued cooperation with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region to eliminate it.

She also called ISIS and terrorism a threat to freedom and democracy and thanked the Kurdistan Region for coexistence, tolerance and protection of refugees and communities, especially the Christian and Yezidi communities.

The meeting also discussed the relations between Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with neighboring countries and the region, the importance of maintaining stability and sovereignty of Iraq, the war in Ukraine and its consequences and several other issues of common interest.
