Erbil to build a shelter for stray dogs

On Sunday, February 26, 2023. The Governor of Erbil, Omed Khoshnaw, chaired a meeting with representatives of the veterinary departments and other relevant authorities, to initiate the construction of a stray animal shelter, after allocating a plot of land for it.

The meeting discussed the health risks posed by the large number of stray animals to citizens, particularly children, as well as their cause in the spread of infectious diseases. To address the phenomenon of stray dog proliferation in the city, Erbil's governor stated: "In the first stage, we set aside some land outside of town to build a shelter. In the second stage, we collect animals from the streets and alleys and bring them to the shelter to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and to limit their population growth and immunization."

It is worth mentioning that the phenomenon of stray dogs in streets, markets, and public places has become a health threat, as it causes the spread of many infectious diseases, and they also pose a threat to the lives of citizens, particularly children, and governorate residents are calling on local authorities to remove them from residential areas.
