Erbil Governor: “Projects in general, and buildings and apartments in particular, must be constructed with excellent design and quality”
In the presence of the concerned parties, the Governor of Erbil, Omed Khoshnaw, chaired a meeting at the Governor’s office today, Monday, February 27, 2023, to assess the earthquakes that the province and other regions of the Kurdistan Region witnessed.
The meeting evaluated the earthquakes that struck Erbil and the rest of the Kurdistan Region in recent days, following the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. Erbil's governor stated that projects, particularly buildings, should be built with "high designs and quality."
The governor of Erbil also emphasized the effects of earthquakes on buildings, stating that earthquakes are "unpredictable natural events." "Building permits must be reviewed prior to construction, and safety conditions must be tightened," he added.
It is stated that there are three seismic zones: the red zone indicates that countries located on the seismic line are in danger, the orange zone indicates that they are affected by earthquakes but to a lesser extent, and the green zone indicates that they are safe from earthquakes. In terms of earthquakes, the Kurdistan Region and Iraq are in the orange zone.
