Governor of Erbil receives the President of the European Federation of Journalists

Today, Monday, April 21, 2025, Omed Khoshnaw, Governor of Erbil, at the Governor's Office, received Albert Hytan, President of the European Federation of Journalists, and an accompanying delegation.
 

During the meeting, the situation of journalism, media work, freedom of journalism and expression, and the laws in this field in the Kurdistan Region were discussed. Both sides emphasized the importance of protecting freedom of journalism and expression as one of the fundamental principles of democracy. The progress and challenges in this field in the region in general were presented, and views were exchanged on them.
 

In this regard, the Governor of Erbil pointed out that ensuring freedom of expression and freedom of the press is one of the goals of the Kurdistan Regional Government, which has led to the establishment of several large channels and numerous media organizations in Kurdistan, and that the field of journalism in general in the Kurdistan Region has entered an advanced stage.

He also stated that journalistic work is not just a profession, but a social responsibility. Therefore, it is necessary for journalists, adhering to the laws of the Kurdistan Region and the ethics of journalistic work, to act responsibly when conveying the picture [or information] and deliver their messages honestly.
 

Finally, the President of the European Federation of Journalists greatly thanked the Governor of Erbil for the reception and emphasized the coordination of their federation with other unions, organizations, and relevant parties involved in journalistic work in the Kurdistan Region.
