Erbil... A Marathon Held on World Bicycle Day
On Monday evening, June 15, 2026, within the framework of continuous attention to developing the sports sector and promoting environmental awareness in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, and under the patronage of Omed Khoshnaw, Governor of Erbil, and with the presence of Radu Butum, Head of the European Union's Erbil Office, the Cycling Union organized an international cycling marathon to mark World Bicycle Day.
This sports event, which took place in a calm atmosphere full of positive energy and saw the participation of a significant number of citizens, athletes, and cycling enthusiasts of all ages, gave the capital a civilized and global character.
The event was not just a sports activity; it also carried several important social and health messages, encouraging citizens to engage in physical activity, promoting health and environmental awareness, and educating the community to reduce car usage, lower harmful gas emissions, and clean up the environment.
In this regard, the Governor of Erbil, in a press statement to the media channels, expressed his pleasure with this public and international activity, stating: "The widespread participation of citizens from various segments of society demonstrates the high level of health, social, and environmental awareness of the capital's residents. The participation of every individual in this activity is highly commendable."
He also thanked the supervisors and organizers of the marathon, as well as the security forces, police, traffic police, and medical emergency teams who assisted in organizing and ensuring the safety of participants.
He further emphasized that within the framework of the Kurdistan Regional Government's plans and strategy, plans and projects are available for creating dedicated bicycle lanes for daily commuting within the city. He added that the Erbil Governorate administration will continue to support similar projects and activities that serve public health and enhance the image of Erbil city.
