In the framework of efforts to increase surface water and groundwater, water recharge and implementation of projects that will have a great impact on helping farmers and livestock breeders in Erbil governorate, several projects have been carried out, some of which have been completed.

For this purpose, in the past six months, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers of the Kurdistan Region (KRG) to reduce the effects of floods that have had a negative impact on the capital Erbil over the past two years. Has approved the construction of 8 ponds in Erbil in the first phase and the construction of 14 ponds in the second phase with a cost of (12 billion and 600 million) dinars, which will have the capacity to absorb 4 to 5 million cubic meters of water. This is in addition to the drilling of 4,320 drinking water wells, 4,831 agricultural wells and 164 industrial wells.

Currently, several important projects for groundwater treatment have been studied, one of which is to increase groundwater through artificial wells worked on by a British company and is scheduled to be in the first phase, 20 wells will be drilled around Erbil, they are located to divert groundwater to the ground and mixed with groundwater reservoirs to increase the amount of water and this method is now common in most countries in the world, and will be implemented throughout the Kurdistan Region.
