Erbil Governor stated that the facility for stray dogs in Erbil is the best in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region
On December 2, 2023, Governor Omed Khoshnaw of Erbil conducted an inspection of the stray dog shelter center, overseeing the collection, care, vaccination, and veterinary treatment processes. He emphasized that the facility is the best in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, attributing its success to a substantial reduction in dog attacks on citizens.
In a press statement, he mentioned that between October 1, 2023, and the present date, a period of two months, over 3,000 stray dogs have been systematically and properly transported to the center. The ongoing effort involves transporting an additional 80 dogs daily, incurring a monthly cost of approximately 10 million dinars for the collection and transportation process.
He further stated that the sheltering and removal of stray dogs from streets and neighborhoods have played a crucial role in notably diminishing instances of dog attacks on citizens. Additionally, there has been a decline in intentional killings of dogs within the city, which some resorted to out of fear of being bitten or attacked.
He added that the center provides comprehensive care for dogs, including food, water, shelter, and weather protection. To meet the needs of the dogs at the center, around 4 tons of food are delivered every day.
He also mentioned that this center is the best in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and that it was built at a cost of 450 million dinars on an area of 20 dunums, 15 kilometers from Erbil's center.
