Erbil Governor's Statement Commemorating the Anfal Genocide Anniversary

In the name of God Most Gracious Most Merciful

On the 36th anniversary of the Anfal campaign and genocide against our people, intended to eradicate the Kurdish national identity and the Kurdish people, we honor the memory of the martyrs and victims of Anfal in Barzan, Garmian, Halabja, and elsewhere. We also pay tribute to all the martyrs of Kurdistan.

Remembering the tragic atrocity committed against the Kurdish people, where thousands of innocent individuals, regardless of age, were forcibly taken to the deserts of southern Iraq, mercilessly massacred, and buried alive, remains a profound scar in the collective memory of the Kurdish community.

On this occasion, we reiterate the imperative for the Iraqi state to acknowledge its constitutional and moral obligation to provide compensation for this significant crime and to take decisive actions to prevent its recurrence in the future.

Omed Khoshnaw

Governor of Erbil
