Governor of Erbil Receives Greek Ambassador to Iraq and Greek Consul General in Kurdistan Region

Today, Thursday, December 4, 2025, Omed Khoshnaw, Governor of Erbil, received Georgios Alemanos, Greek Ambassador to Iraq, and Nikolaos Stergioulas, Greek Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, at the Governorate Diwan. 

 

During the meeting, the Greek Ambassador to Iraq thanked for the opportunity and reiterated that the Kurdistan Region is of interest to Greece, and the people of Kurdistan themselves are like a dynamo, constantly progressing and developing in the region.

 

For his part, the Governor of Erbil, while warmly welcoming the Greek Ambassador to Iraq and the Greek Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, referred to the general political changes in Iraq, especially after the parliamentary election process, and expressed hope that a new government would be formed as soon as possible and the problems and difficulties of citizens would be resolved. He also spoke about their historical relationship and emphasized that they are in good relations with the Greek Consulate General.


Both sides expressed their desire to further strengthen relations at the economic, cultural, artistic, and general cultural levels, and for this, opening up opportunities and providing more facilities for tourist travel was considered important.
Both sides discussed the importance of the Erbil Green Belt project, which is an important and strategic project for Erbil city and is being implemented under the command and recommendation of His Excellency Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, in order to reduce the effects of climate change, within the framework of Erbil city's master plan.


 

The role of Greek experts in this belt and the import of olive trees using high quality and a modern and smart irrigation system was considered.


At the same time, the opening of the direct air route between Erbil and Athens was praised, which has had a positive impact on the economic, tourism, and general exchange sectors.
The Greek Ambassador to Iraq praised the caravan of reconstruction and development in the Kurdistan Region in general and Erbil in particular and commended His Excellency Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, for implementing several strategic projects in various public service sectors.
He also expressed his country's desire to further develop relations with the Kurdistan Region.
The Governor of Erbil reiterated all preparations and facilities for further strengthening these relations to the visiting delegation.
