Erbil… Czech experts prepare study for the rehabilitation and restoration of Choli Minaret

On Monday, May 5, 2025, the Governor of Erbil, Omed Khoshnaw, accompanied by Dr. Nader Bakr, Director of Antiquities in Erbil, visited the Choli Minaret in Erbil to closely learn the views of a team of experts from the Czech Republic. They intend to study the Choli Minaret site in detail over several days and present the results of their research in the form of a scientific report to the concerned authorities.

The Governor of Erbil stressed that the Erbil Citadel and the Muzaffariya Minaret (Choli Minaret) are two of Erbil's most significant historical landmarks, and that they will do their utmost to protect these sites. He noted that they are awaiting the results of the Czech expert team's study before taking concrete action, with the aim of making this historical monument a major destination for international tourists.

The Choli Minaret, also known as the 'Muzaffariya Minaret,' is one of Erbil's ancient monuments, situated southwest of the Erbil Citadel. It was constructed during the reign of Sultan Muzaffar al-Din Kokbori (who ruled Erbil from 1190-1232 AD), a period when the city enjoyed prosperity and development. It is thought to be the only surviving part of a large mosque that once stood at the same location. The people of Erbil also refer to it as 'Manarat Choli,' meaning 'Minaret of the Wild' or 'Minaret of the Desert'.
