Erbil...A renewable energy workshop and the launch of the solar electricity generation project

On Wednesday, February 22, 2023, on the occasion of Erbil Governorate's Environment Day, and in the presence of Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw and Abdul Rahman Siddiq, Head of the Environmental Protection board in the Kurdistan Region, Salahaddin University's College of Engineering hosted a workshop on renewable energy and the solar energy project, as well as the benefits and challenges of working with it in the Kurdistan Region, in Dr. Sherko Baban Hall.

During the workshop, Erbil's governor emphasized the importance of producing electricity using alternative energy, particularly solar energy. Khoshnaw discussed the impact of renewable energy on achieving sustainable development, raising awareness of the need to rationalize the consumption of traditional energy sources in order to provide an opportunity for future generations to benefit from them, and emphasizing the magnitude of the environmental risks confronting humanity and the magnitude of the crisis confronting the world in the case of fuel dependence and failure to develop alternative sources.

Identifying types of energy, the concept of renewable energy and its characteristics, the concept of non-renewable energy, identifying energy sources, obstacles to sustainable development, areas of renewable energy contribution to achieving sustainable development, and the relationship of renewable energy with sustainable development were among the workshop topics.

The Crisis Center in Erbil governorate and UNDP are providing logistical and financial support for this project for the Department of Mechanics and Mechatronics in the College of Engineering.

The Engineering College has been appointed by the Erbil governorate to carry out the project. In the girls' industrial school, a similar project has been established.

It is worth mentioning that the project is completely environmentally friendly, with no other source other than sunlight being used, and that the nature and environment of the Kurdistan Region are suitable for the development of these projects, which can provide a portion of the electricity in the Kurdistan Region.
