In the Capital Erbil... Another Important and Strategic Project for Monitoring and Managing Surface and Groundwater Announced

On Tuesday, January 27, 2026, within the framework of efforts to increase surface and groundwater, conserve water, and implement projects that will have a significant impact on the Kurdistan Region, and in the presence of Begard Talabani, Minister of Agriculture, Omed Khoshnaw, Governor of Erbil, Dr. Mohammed Shukri, Head of the Investment Board, Yann Braem, Consul General of France in Erbil, Sarwar Kamal, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Trade, Ari Ahmed, Director General of Water and Wastewater for the Region, Karwan Sabah, Director General of Water Resources for the Region, Hêmin Sayed Murad, Director General of Agriculture for Erbil, and a number of other administrative officials, a joint Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Municipalities of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Consulate General of France in Erbil was signed within the framework of the "Keywano, GreenCities" project.
 

This project, which marks an important beginning for supporting infrastructure and better monitoring and strategic management of water usage, and how to access necessary and accurate data and information about water revenue, usage, and control of water resources in the Kurdistan Region, will first be implemented in the capital Erbil. This will involve establishing specialized stations for reading surface and groundwater levels.
 

During the ceremony, the Governor of Erbil, while highly appreciating the project's importance and necessity, emphasized the development of valuable and shared relations, the long-standing historical friendship between the French government and the Kurdistan Region, and the country's effective support and participation in reducing the effects and risks of climate change and developing economic and agricultural infrastructure, water management strategies, and irrigation projects.
