Erbil Governor Receives Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

On Sunday evening, February 1, 2026, Omed Khoshnaw, Governor of Erbil, received Berivan Aymaz, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at the Governorate Diwan, in the presence of Renas Jano, representative of the Kurdistan Diaspora Confederation.
 

During the meeting, which was attended by the Director of the Governor's Office and the Directors of Planning, Engineering, Relations, and Crisis Management of the Governorate, emphasis was placed on strengthening the relations between the Kurdistan Region and North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Subsequently, the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, while appreciating the work of Erbil Governorate, expressed her pleasure in visiting the capital of the Kurdistan Region.
She noted that the Kurdistan Region has witnessed significant development in recent decades and has become an important center in the Middle East.

She stressed the strengthening of relations between Germany and Kurdistan for a long-term phase through the work of German companies in the Kurdistan Region and the enhancement of cultural exchange between the two sides.
 

For this purpose, she officially invited the Governor of Erbil to visit their regional parliament. Later, given that the largest Kurdish diaspora in Europe lives in their region, she proposed a sister city initiative between Düsseldorf and Erbil to the Governor of Erbil.
 

In this regard, the Governor of Erbil expressed his pleasure regarding the proposal and stated that this suggestion is a great step in advancing friendship and strengthening relations between the Kurdistan Region and Germany. He also accepted her invitation to visit their regional parliament.
 

Finally, the discussion highlighted all the important and strategic projects implemented in Erbil Governorate in the recent past, and touched upon climate change and its consequences, as well as the problems and challenges faced by the region due to it in recent years, with reference to all the solutions adopted by the Kurdistan Regional Government.
